Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to new and old homes out of the world's most energy efficient and sturdy material: earth; now expands to providing people with their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to construct their own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, New Mexico. They regularly work throughout the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, for both urban and rural projects. They love working with individuals and communities alike to develop, preserve and restore earth buildings. During a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the truly amazing pleasure of adding your bathroom accessory for the now expanded Old Town Center for the Arts.

It's All within the Shape

Beyond Adobe is likely to make any size, shape, or kind of adobe brick you want, and is able to make custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to meet architectural demands. They will use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, based on the client and circumstances.

Brick - Pressed adobe blocks, best known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are made using a combination of present day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost completely dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation for their uniformity of configuration. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be made in all seasons because of the reduced moisture content.

Handmade, or puddled, adobe bricks begin whenever a simple combination of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. A combination will then be laid in forms on the ground to mold the mud in to the desired brick shape and size. The shape is lifted off of the adobe once the mud dries enough to help keep the adobes shape without the form. Following a day or two of sunshine, the bricks are placed on edge to dry. The drying process can take from to one month to totally cure according to conditions. Puddled adobes lead to bricks having a more individual shape, size and appear; no two bricks are very exactly the same. They provide for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in the finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and the ones with difficult access, site made adobes often work best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has made bricks from the borderlands of Mexico for the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters are a mixture of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents that can come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their own, plus a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and environmentally friendly in the their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe when applying within their completed form. They're extremely energy efficient and help control temperature and humidity fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the winter months. Also, they are non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and easily repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their very own true, earth plaster. The plaster may be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats both for adobe and straw bale walls. Additionally, it can also function as beautiful final plaster.

Brick - Beyond Adobe can be an officially certified installer of American Clay Earth Plasters. Manufactured in, and ultizing materials from, the United States, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
