Not only the Name, however the History

Their history of earth stewardship, environmental consciousness and a strong belief in sustainable communities, is due to their base in Sedona, and expands within their work through the Southwest.

He continued this environmentally-based entrepreneurial spirit by doing work for, and creating, new ventures from building the Sedona Community Recycling Center to starting and owning a local curbside recycling and waste collection company. In 2004, Mr. Wayne hand-formed Beyond Adobe in the clay soils with the Verde Valley. Today, he resides in Sedona with his wife, Robin, and continues to expand Beyond Adobe's outreach in services and classes.

Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal would be to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable methods to old and new homes out from the world's most energy efficient and sturdy material: earth; and now expands to providing individuals with their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to construct their particular.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work through the entire American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, for urban and rural projects. They enjoy working together with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. During a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the great pleasure of adding your bathroom accessory for the now expanded Old Town Center for your Arts.

It's All within the Shape

Beyond Adobe can make any size, shape, or kind of adobe brick you would like, and is capable of making custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to satisfy architectural demands. They use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, depending on the client and circumstances.

Sustainable - Pressed adobe blocks, best known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are created employing a combination of present day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost completely dry and ready for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker plus more efficient installation for their uniformity of configuration. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which boosts the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be made in every seasons because of the reduced moisture content.

Made by hand, or puddled, adobe bricks begin whenever a simple combination of earth and water is mixed to some near mud consistency. The mixture will then be laid in forms on the floor to mold the mud into the desired brick configuration. The form is lifted from the adobe when the mud dries enough to maintain the adobes shape without the form. After having a few days of sunshine, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process can take in one to one month to totally cure according to climate conditions. Puddled adobes lead to bricks with a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks are very exactly the same. They offer to get a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and those with difficult access, site made adobes often work most effectively for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has made bricks in the borderlands of Mexico to the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters certainly are a blend of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents that come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their very own, plus a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and environmentally friendly in both their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe when applying in their completed form. They are extremely energy-efficient and help control humidity and temperature fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the winter months. They are also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and easily repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their own true, earth plaster. The plaster might be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for adobe and straw bale walls. Furthermore, it may also serve as beautiful final plaster.

Workshops - Beyond Adobe can be an officially certified installer of yankee Clay Earth Plasters. Manufactured in, and using materials from, america, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
