Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to old and new homes from the world's most energy-efficient and durable material: earth; and now expands to providing individuals with their greatest tool of all: knowledge, to build their own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work through the entire American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, for both urban and rural projects. They enjoy working together with individuals and communities alike to develop, preserve and restore earth buildings. During a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the truly amazing pleasure of adding your bathrooms accessory for the now expanded Old Town Center for that Arts.

It's all regulated in the Shape

Beyond Adobe can make any size, shape, or type of adobe brick you would like, and is capable of making custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to fulfill architectural demands. They use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, depending on the client and circumstances.

Environment - Pressed adobe blocks, commonly known as as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are manufactured using a mix of modern-day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost dry and ready for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation for their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be made in all seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Made by hand, or puddled, adobe bricks begin whenever a simple mixture of earth and water is mixed to some near mud consistency. A combination will then be laid in forms on the floor to mold the mud into the desired brick shape and size. The form is lifted off of the adobe if the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape with no form. After a couple of days regarding, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process will take from to four weeks to fully cure based on weather conditions. Puddled adobes bring about bricks with a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks can be exactly the same. They supply for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and those with difficult access, site made adobes often perform best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has made bricks in the borderlands of Mexico for the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. They are extremely energy efficient which help control humidity and temperature fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the wintertime. They are also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and easily repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their own true, earth plaster. The plaster might be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for both adobe and straw bale walls. Furthermore, it can also function as beautiful final plaster.
