Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to new and old homes out from the world's most power efficient and sturdy material: earth; and now expands to providing people with their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to create their own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work through the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They like working together with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. It's all regulated within the Shape

Beyond Adobe can make any size, shape, or kind of adobe brick you would like, and is able to make custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to fulfill architectural demands. They will use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, with respect to the client and circumstances.

Earth - Pressed adobe blocks, sometimes known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are manufactured using a combination of modern day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost completely dry and ready for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation due to their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which increases the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be made in most seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Hand made, or puddled, adobe bricks begin each time a simple mixture of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. The mixture will then be laid in forms on a lawn to mold the mud into the desired brick shape and size. The shape is lifted from the adobe when the mud dries enough to help keep the adobes shape minus the form. Following a day or two regarding, the bricks are placed on edge to dry. The drying process may take from one to four weeks to completely cure depending on conditions. Puddled adobes bring about bricks having a more individual shape, size and appearance; no two bricks can be the same. They provide for a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and the ones with difficult access, site made adobes often work best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe makes bricks from your borderlands of Mexico to the farm country of Montana.
