Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable answers to old and new homes from the world's most energy-efficient and durable material: earth; and today expands to providing people who have their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to create their very own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, New Mexico. They regularly work throughout the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They love dealing with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. Throughout a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the truly amazing pleasure of adding your bathrooms accessory for the now expanded Old Town Center for the Arts.

It's all regulated inside the Shape

Beyond Adobe can make any size, shape, or kind of adobe brick you would like, and it is capable of making custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to satisfy architectural demands. They will use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, based on the client and circumstances.

Design - Pressed adobe blocks, commonly known as as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are created employing a combination of present day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by utilizing hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost totally dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and more efficient installation due to their uniformity of configuration. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be produced in every seasons as a result of reduced moisture content.

Hand made, or puddled, adobe bricks begin whenever a simple mixture of earth and water is mixed to a near mud consistency. The mixture will then be laid in forms on the floor to mold the mud in to the desired brick configuration. The proper execution is lifted off of the adobe when the mud dries enough to help keep the adobes shape without the form. After having a day or two of sunshine, the bricks are placed on edge to dry. The drying process may take in one to one month to completely cure according to climate conditions. Puddled adobes result in bricks using a more individual shape, size and appearance; no two bricks are quite the same. They offer for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed inside a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and the ones with difficult access, site made adobes often work best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe makes bricks from the borderlands of Mexico to the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters are a mixture of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents that can come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their very own, and a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and environmentally friendly both in their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe to use when applying within their completed form. They are extremely energy efficient which help control humidity and temperature fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the wintertime. They are also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and simply repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their own true, earth plaster. The plaster may be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats both for adobe and straw bale walls. Furthermore, additionally, it may serve as beautiful final plaster.

DIY - Beyond Adobe is also an officially certified installer of yankee Clay Earth Plasters. Produced in, and taking advantage of materials from, the United States, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
