Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable methods to new and old homes from the world's most energy efficient and sturdy material: earth; and now expands to providing people who have their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to build their very own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, New Mexico. They regularly work through the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They like working with individuals and communities alike to develop, preserve and restore earth buildings. Within a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the fantastic pleasure of adding your bathroom addition for the now expanded Old Town Center for that Arts.

It's All within the Shape

Beyond Adobe will make any size, shape, or type of adobe brick you want, and it is capable of making custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to meet architectural demands. They'll use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, depending on the client and circumstances.

Dirt - Pressed adobe blocks, best known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are manufactured using a mix of present day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by utilizing hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost completely dry and ready for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and more efficient installation because of their uniformity of configuration. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which boosts the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be created in most seasons because of the reduced moisture content.

Handmade, or puddled, adobe bricks begin whenever a simple combination of earth and water is mixed to some near mud consistency. A combination will then be laid in forms on a lawn to mold the mud into the desired brick configuration. The shape is lifted from the adobe once the mud dries enough to maintain the adobes shape minus the form. After having a couple of days of sunshine, the bricks are set on edge to dry. The drying process may take in one to one month to totally cure based on climate conditions. Puddled adobes lead to bricks having a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks are quite the same. They offer for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed inside a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and the ones with difficult access, site made adobes often work most effectively for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe makes bricks from the borderlands of Mexico for the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. They're extremely energy-efficient which help control humidity and temperature fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the winter months. They're also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and easily repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their own true, earth plaster. The plaster may be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for both adobe and straw bale walls. In addition, additionally, it may serve as beautiful final plaster.
