Not only the Name, nevertheless the History

Beyond Adobe is an adobe block, also called adobe brick, supplier and green building construction company focusing on earthen-based methods and materials. Their history of earth stewardship, environmental consciousness plus a strong belief in sustainable communities, comes from their base in Sedona, and expands into their work through the Southwest.

Company President and Outreach Educator of Workshops, Adam Wayne, earned a degree in Environmental Science at Northern Arizona University, where he also helped start NAU Recycles. He continued this environmentally-based entrepreneurial spirit by doing work for, and creating, new ventures from building the Sedona Community Recycling Center to starting and managing a local curbside recycling and waste collection company. In 2004, Mr. Wayne hand-formed Beyond Adobe from your clay soils of the Verde Valley. Today, he resides in Sedona along with his wife, Robin, and continues to expand Beyond Adobe's outreach in services and classes.

Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable answers to new and old homes from the world's most energy efficient and durable material: earth; and today expands to providing people who have their greatest tool of: knowledge, to create their very own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work through the entire American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, for urban and rural projects. They love working with individuals and communities alike to produce, preserve and restore earth buildings. Throughout a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the great pleasure of adding a bathroom addition for the now expanded Old Town Center for your Arts.

It's All inside the Shape

Beyond Adobe is likely to make any size, shape, or kind of adobe brick you want, and is also creating custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to fulfill architectural demands. They'll use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, depending on the client and circumstances.

Earth - Pressed adobe blocks, best known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are made using a mixture of modern-day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and more efficient installation because of their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be created in most seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Made by hand, or puddled, adobe bricks begin when a simple mixture of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. A combination will then be laid in forms on a lawn to mold the mud to the desired brick size and shape. The shape is lifted off of the adobe if the mud dries enough to maintain the adobes shape minus the form. Following a couple of days of sunshine, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process will take from to one month to fully cure depending on conditions. Puddled adobes lead to bricks having a more individual shape, size and appear; no two bricks are quite exactly the same. They offer to get a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and people with difficult access, site made adobes often work best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe makes bricks from your borderlands of Mexico towards the farm country of Montana.
