Brick - Inside a perfect world everybody would plant a garden to know the valuable process of creating the sustainance we rely on. So too would it be ideal when we each knew the craft to build our very own dwellings, in a sustainable way, from your earth but for the Earth, inside a type of resillient and timeless beauty.

Beyond Adobe, a Verde Valley contractor for more than 20 years, is providing this using their new Adobe Brick & Wall Building Workshops, starting Memorial Day weekend, May 22-24.

Not only the Name, but the History

Beyond Adobe is surely an adobe block, also referred to as adobe brick, supplier and green building construction company focusing on earthen-based methods and materials. Their reputation earth stewardship, environmental consciousness plus a strong belief in sustainable communities, comes from their base in Sedona, and expands to their work through the entire Southwest.

Company President and Outreach Educator of Workshops, Adam Wayne, earned a diploma in Environmental Science at Northern Arizona University, where he also helped start NAU Recycles. He continued this environmentally-based entrepreneurial spirit by doing work for, and creating, new ventures from building the Sedona Community Recycling Center to starting and owning a local curbside recycling and waste collection company. In 2004, Mr. Wayne hand-formed Beyond Adobe from the clay soils of the Verde Valley. Today, he resides in Sedona with his wife, Robin, and will continue to expand Beyond Adobe's outreach in services and classes.

Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to old and new homes out from the world's most power efficient and durable material: earth; now expands to providing people who have their greatest tool of all: knowledge, to build their own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, New Mexico. They regularly work through the entire American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They like working with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. Within a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they'd the great pleasure of adding your bathroom accessory for the now expanded Old Town Center for the Arts.

It's all regulated within the Shape

Beyond Adobe is likely to make any size, shape, or type of adobe brick you would like, and it is creating custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to meet architectural demands. They use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, depending on the client and circumstances.

Sustainable - Pressed adobe blocks, commonly known as as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are made utilizing a combination of modern-day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost totally dry and ready for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in the compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and more efficient installation because of their uniformity of size and shape. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be created in every seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Hand made, or puddled, adobe bricks begin whenever a simple mix of earth and water is mixed to a near mud consistency. The mix is then laid in forms on the ground to mold the mud in to the desired brick shape and size. The proper execution is lifted from the adobe once the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape minus the form. After having a day or two of sunshine, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process can take in one to one month to completely cure according to conditions. Puddled adobes result in bricks using a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks are quite exactly the same. They supply for a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in the finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and people with difficult access, site made adobes often perform best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has made bricks from your borderlands of Mexico to the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters really are a combination of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents which come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods that belongs to them, and a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and environmentally friendly in the their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe to use when applying in their completed form. They are extremely energy efficient which help control temperature and humidity fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in Winter. They are also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and simply repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their own true, earth plaster. The plaster might be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for adobe and straw bale walls. Additionally, it can also serve as beautiful final plaster.

Construction - Beyond Adobe is also an officially certified installer of yank Clay Earth Plasters. Produced in, and taking advantage of materials from, america, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
