Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable answers to old and new homes out from the world's most energy-efficient and durable material: earth; and today expands to providing individuals with their greatest tool of: knowledge, to build their own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work through the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They like working with individuals and communities alike to develop, preserve and restore earth buildings. Throughout a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they'd the truly amazing pleasure of adding a bathroom addition to the now expanded Old Town Center for the Arts.

To make sure in the Shape

Beyond Adobe will make any size, shape, or kind of adobe brick you want, and is able to make custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to fulfill architectural demands. They'll use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, based on the client and circumstances.

Block - Pressed adobe blocks, sometimes known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are created employing a mixture of modern-day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by utilizing hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation due to their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be created in every seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Hand made, or puddled, adobe bricks begin each time a simple mix of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. The mixture will then be laid in forms on a lawn to mold the mud to the desired brick shape and size. The proper execution is lifted from the adobe when the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape without the form. Following a couple of days regarding, the bricks are placed on edge to dry. The drying process may take from one to a month to totally cure according to weather conditions. Puddled adobes result in bricks having a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks are quite exactly the same. They supply for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed inside a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and people with difficult access, site made adobes often work most effectively for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has created bricks from the borderlands of Mexico to the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters certainly are a combination of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents that come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their own, plus a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and eco-friendly in both their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then dependable when applying within their completed form. They're extremely power efficient and help control humidity and temperature fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the winter months. Also, they are non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their very own true, earth plaster. The plaster may be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for both adobe and straw bale walls. Furthermore, it may also work as beautiful final plaster.
