Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable methods to old and new homes from the world's most energy-efficient and sturdy material: earth; now expands to providing people who have their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to construct their particular.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work throughout the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They enjoy working together with individuals and communities alike to develop, preserve and restore earth buildings. Within a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the truly amazing pleasure of adding a bathroom addition for the now expanded Old Town Center for the Arts.

It's all regulated inside the Shape

Beyond Adobe is likely to make any size, shape, or kind of adobe brick you desire, and is also creating custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to satisfy architectural demands. They use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, depending on the client and circumstances.

Adobe - Pressed adobe blocks, commonly known as as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are manufactured employing a mixture of present day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by utilizing hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost totally dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker plus more efficient installation because of their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be made in all seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Hand made, or puddled, adobe bricks begin when a simple mix of earth and water is mixed to some near mud consistency. The mixture is then laid in forms on the floor to mold the mud in to the desired brick size and shape. The form is lifted from the adobe if the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape without the form. After having a few days of sunshine, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process may take from one to a month to completely cure according to weather conditions. Puddled adobes lead to bricks having a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks can be exactly the same. They provide for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and people with difficult access, site made adobes often perform best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe makes bricks from the borderlands of Mexico to the farm country of Montana.

They are also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and simply repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their own true, earth plaster. The plaster may be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for adobe and straw bale walls. In addition, it may also work as beautiful final plaster.
