Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable methods to old and new homes out from the world's most energy-efficient and durable material: earth; and today expands to providing people with their greatest tool of all: knowledge, to build their very own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work throughout the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, for both urban and rural projects. They enjoy working with individuals and communities alike to produce, preserve and restore earth buildings. Within a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the fantastic pleasure of adding a bathroom addition for the now expanded Old Town Center for that Arts.

It's All within the Shape

Beyond Adobe will make any size, shape, or form of adobe brick you desire, and is also creating custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to fulfill architectural demands. They use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, based on the client and circumstances.

Earth - Pressed adobe blocks, best known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are created utilizing a mixture of modern day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in the compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker plus more efficient installation because of their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be produced in most seasons because of the reduced moisture content.

Made by hand, or puddled, adobe bricks begin each time a simple mixture of earth and water is mixed to a near mud consistency. A combination will then be laid in forms on a lawn to mold the mud into the desired brick size and shape. The shape is lifted from the adobe once the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape with no form. After a day or two associated with, the bricks are set on edge to dry. The drying process may take from to four weeks to fully cure depending on weather conditions. Puddled adobes lead to bricks with a more individual shape, size and appear; no two bricks are quite the same. They offer to get a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed inside a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and people with difficult access, site made adobes often work most effectively for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has made bricks from the borderlands of Mexico to the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters really are a blend of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents that can come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their own, and a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and green in the their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe to use when applying in their completed form. They're extremely energy efficient which help control humidity and temperature fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the wintertime. Also, they are non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and easily repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their very own true, earth plaster. The plaster may be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for both adobe and straw bale walls. Furthermore, it may also work as beautiful final plaster.

Building - Beyond Adobe can also be an officially certified installer of American Clay Earth Plasters. Manufactured in, and taking advantage of materials from, the United States, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
