Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable answers to new and old homes out of the world's most energy efficient and sturdy material: earth; now expands to providing individuals with their greatest tool of all: knowledge, to construct their own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, New Mexico. They regularly work through the entire American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They enjoy dealing with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. During a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they'd the great pleasure of adding your bathroom accessory for the now expanded Old Town Center for your Arts.

It's All in the Shape

Beyond Adobe will make any size, shape, or type of adobe brick you would like, and it is able to make custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to fulfill architectural demands. They'll use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, based on the client and circumstances.

Earth - Pressed adobe blocks, commonly known as as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are created using a combination of present day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by making use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost totally dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in the compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker plus more efficient installation due to their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which increases the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be created in most seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Made by hand, or puddled, adobe bricks begin whenever a simple combination of earth and water is mixed to a near mud consistency. The mix will then be laid in forms on the ground to mold the mud to the desired brick shape and size. The proper execution is lifted from the adobe if the mud dries enough to maintain the adobes shape minus the form. After a few days associated with, the bricks are placed on edge to dry. The drying process may take from one to a month to totally cure according to climate conditions. Puddled adobes bring about bricks with a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks are very the identical. They offer to get a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in the finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and the ones with difficult access, site made adobes often work best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has made bricks in the borderlands of Mexico for the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters are a mixture of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents that can come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their own, and a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and environmentally friendly in the their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe to use when applying inside their completed form. They may be extremely energy efficient which help control temperature and humidity fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in Winter. They're also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and easily repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their very own true, earth plaster. The plaster may be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats both for adobe and straw bale walls. Additionally, it may also serve as beautiful final plaster.

Dirt - Beyond Adobe can be an officially certified installer of American Clay Earth Plasters. Produced in, and ultizing materials from, america, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
