Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to old and new homes from the world's most energy efficient and sturdy material: earth; now expands to providing people who have their greatest tool of all: knowledge, to construct their particular.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work through the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They love working with individuals and communities alike to develop, preserve and restore earth buildings. During a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the great pleasure of adding your bathrooms addition to the now expanded Old Town Center for the Arts.

It's All in the Shape

Beyond Adobe can make any size, shape, or form of adobe brick you would like, and is creating custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to satisfy architectural demands. They'll use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, with respect to the client and circumstances.

Environment - Pressed adobe blocks, best known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are manufactured using a mixture of present day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by making use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation because of their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which boosts the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be produced in all seasons because of the reduced moisture content.

Made by hand, or puddled, adobe bricks begin when a simple mix of earth and water is mixed to some near mud consistency. A combination is then laid in forms on a lawn to mold the mud in to the desired brick configuration. The proper execution is lifted from the adobe if the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape minus the form. After having a day or two regarding, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process can take from one to one month to completely cure based on climate conditions. Puddled adobes bring about bricks having a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks can be the same. They supply for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in the finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and those with difficult access, site made adobes often work most effectively for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has created bricks from your borderlands of Mexico for the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters are a mixture of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents that can come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their own, plus a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and green both in their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe to use when applying in their completed form. They're extremely energy efficient which help control temperature and humidity fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the wintertime. They are also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and simply repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their own true, earth plaster. The plaster may be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for both adobe and straw bale walls. Additionally, it can also work as beautiful final plaster.

Sustainable - Beyond Adobe can be an officially certified installer of American Clay Earth Plasters. Stated in, and taking advantage of materials from, the usa, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
