Beyond Adobe, a Verde Valley contractor for upwards of 20 years, is providing this with their new Adobe Brick & Wall Building Workshops, starting Memorial Day weekend, May 22-24.

Not Just the Name, but the History

Beyond Adobe is definitely an adobe block, also called adobe brick, supplier and green building construction company focusing on earthen-based methods and materials. He continued this environmentally-based entrepreneurial spirit by employed by, and creating, new ventures from building the Sedona Community Recycling Center to starting and running a local curbside recycling and waste collection company. In 2004, Mr. Wayne hand-formed Beyond Adobe in the clay soils with the Verde Valley. Today, he resides in Sedona along with his wife, Robin, and continues to expand Beyond Adobe's outreach in services and classes.

Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to old and new homes from the world's most energy efficient and durable material: earth; and today expands to providing people who have their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to create their own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work through the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They love working together with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. Within a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the fantastic pleasure of adding a bathroom accessory for the now expanded Old Town Center for your Arts.

To make sure in the Shape

Beyond Adobe will make any size, shape, or kind of adobe brick you would like, and it is capable of making custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to fulfill architectural demands. They'll use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, depending on the client and circumstances.

Environment - Pressed adobe blocks, commonly known as as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are created employing a combination of present day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by utilizing hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost totally dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in the compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation because of their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be produced in most seasons as a result of reduced moisture content.

Handmade, or puddled, adobe bricks begin each time a simple combination of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. The mix is then laid in forms on the ground to mold the mud in to the desired brick shape and size. The shape is lifted off the adobe once the mud dries enough to maintain the adobes shape minus the form. After a couple of days of sunshine, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process can take from to one month to totally cure based on climate conditions. Puddled adobes bring about bricks using a more individual shape, size and appearance; no two bricks are quite the same. They offer for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in the finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and the ones with difficult access, site made adobes often work best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has made bricks from the borderlands of Mexico for the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters really are a blend of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents that come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their own, along with a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and green in the their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe to use when applying in their completed form. They may be extremely power efficient and help control humidity and temperature fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the winter months. They're also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and simply repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their particular true, earth plaster. The plaster may be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats both for adobe and straw bale walls. Additionally, additionally, it may serve as beautiful final plaster.

Building - Beyond Adobe can be an officially certified installer of American Clay Earth Plasters. Stated in, and ultizing materials from, america, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
