Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to new and old homes out from the world's most energy-efficient and sturdy material: earth; and now expands to providing people who have their greatest tool of all: knowledge, to build their own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, New Mexico. They regularly work throughout the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, for urban and rural projects. They like dealing with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. Within a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, that they had the great pleasure of adding your bathroom accessory for the now expanded Old Town Center for the Arts.

To make sure within the Shape

Beyond Adobe is likely to make any size, shape, or type of adobe brick you desire, and is creating custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to meet architectural demands. They will use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, with respect to the client and circumstances.

Arizona - Pressed adobe blocks, sometimes known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are made using a mix of modern-day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost totally dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker plus more efficient installation due to their uniformity of size and shape. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which boosts the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be produced in all seasons because of the reduced moisture content.

Handmade, or puddled, adobe bricks begin when a simple combination of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. The mixture will then be laid in forms on the floor to mold the mud in to the desired brick configuration. The proper execution is lifted off the adobe if the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape without the form. Following a couple of days associated with, the bricks are set on edge to dry. The drying process can take from one to four weeks to totally cure depending on conditions. Puddled adobes result in bricks using a more individual shape, size and appearance; no two bricks can be the same. They supply for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and the ones with difficult access, site made adobes often work most effectively for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has made bricks in the borderlands of Mexico to the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters certainly are a blend of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents which come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their own, plus a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and environmentally friendly in both their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe to use when applying within their completed form. They're extremely energy-efficient and help control temperature and humidity fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the wintertime. They're also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and simply repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their own true, earth plaster. The plaster could be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats both for adobe and straw bale walls. In addition, it may also work as beautiful final plaster.
