It's All in the Shape

Beyond Adobe will make any size, shape, or form of adobe brick you would like, and is also capable of making custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to satisfy architectural demands. They use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, based on the client and circumstances.

Dirt - Pressed adobe blocks, best known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are created utilizing a combination of modern day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and more efficient installation for their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be made in every seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Handmade, or puddled, adobe bricks begin each time a simple mixture of earth and water is mixed to some near mud consistency. A combination is then laid in forms on a lawn to mold the mud to the desired brick shape and size. The proper execution is lifted off of the adobe if the mud dries enough to help keep the adobes shape without the form. Following a couple of days of sunshine, the bricks are set on edge to dry. The drying process can take from one to four weeks to totally cure based on weather conditions. Puddled adobes bring about bricks with a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks are quite exactly the same. They supply to get a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed inside a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and the ones with difficult access, site made adobes often work most effectively for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has created bricks from the borderlands of Mexico towards the farm country of Montana.
