Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable methods to new and old homes out from the world's most power efficient and sturdy material: earth; now expands to providing people with their greatest tool of all: knowledge, to build their own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work throughout the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They love working together with individuals and communities alike to develop, preserve and restore earth buildings. During a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the great pleasure of adding a bathroom addition to the now expanded Old Town Center for your Arts.

It's all regulated in the Shape

Beyond Adobe will make any size, shape, or form of adobe brick you desire, and it is creating custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to fulfill architectural demands. They will use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, based on the client and circumstances.

Workshops - Pressed adobe blocks, sometimes known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are created employing a mixture of modern day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost dry and ready for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation due to their uniformity of size and shape. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which boosts the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be produced in most seasons as a result of reduced moisture content.

Made by hand, or puddled, adobe bricks begin whenever a simple mix of earth and water is mixed to a near mud consistency. The mix will be laid in forms on the floor to mold the mud to the desired brick configuration. The form is lifted off of the adobe if the mud dries enough to help keep the adobes shape without the form. After having a couple of days associated with, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process will take in one to a month to totally cure depending on climate conditions. Puddled adobes result in bricks using a more individual shape, size and appear; no two bricks are quite exactly the same. They supply for a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and those with difficult access, site made adobes often work most effectively for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe makes bricks from your borderlands of Mexico to the farm country of Montana.
