Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to new and old homes from the world's most energy-efficient and sturdy material: earth; now expands to providing individuals with their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to create their own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, New Mexico. They regularly work through the entire American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, for urban and rural projects. They like dealing with individuals and communities alike to produce, preserve and restore earth buildings. Within a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, that they had the truly amazing pleasure of adding a bathroom addition to the now expanded Old Town Center for that Arts.

It's All within the Shape

Beyond Adobe is likely to make any size, shape, or form of adobe brick you would like, and is able to make custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to satisfy architectural demands. They'll use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, with respect to the client and circumstances.

Earth - Pressed adobe blocks, sometimes known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are created employing a mix of modern day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by making use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and more efficient installation for their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which increases the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be made in all seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Handmade, or puddled, adobe bricks begin whenever a simple combination of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. The mix will be laid in forms on the ground to mold the mud to the desired brick size and shape. The form is lifted from the adobe if the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape without the form. Following a couple of days of sunshine, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process may take in one to one month to totally cure according to climate conditions. Puddled adobes lead to bricks having a more individual shape, size and appearance; no two bricks are quite the identical. They offer for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed inside a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and those with difficult access, site made adobes often work best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has created bricks in the borderlands of Mexico towards the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters are a mixture of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents which come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their own, and a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and eco-friendly in both their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then dependable when applying inside their completed form. They may be extremely energy efficient that assist control temperature and humidity fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in Winter. They're also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and simply repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their particular true, earth plaster. The plaster could be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for both adobe and straw bale walls. Additionally, it may also serve as beautiful final plaster.
