Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal would be to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to old and new homes out from the world's most energy-efficient and durable material: earth; and today expands to providing people with their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to construct their particular.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work throughout the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They like working together with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. It's All in the Shape

Beyond Adobe is likely to make any size, shape, or kind of adobe brick you desire, and it is creating custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to satisfy architectural demands. They use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, depending on the client and circumstances.

DIY - Pressed adobe blocks, commonly known as as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are made utilizing a mix of modern day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost completely dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in the compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker plus more efficient installation because of their uniformity of configuration. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which increases the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be produced in all seasons because of the reduced moisture content.

Handmade, or puddled, adobe bricks begin each time a simple mix of earth and water is mixed to a near mud consistency. The mix is then laid in forms on the floor to mold the mud in to the desired brick configuration. The shape is lifted off the adobe when the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape minus the form. Following a couple of days of sunshine, the bricks are set on edge to dry. The drying process can take in one to four weeks to completely cure according to climate conditions. Puddled adobes result in bricks using a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks are very the same. They supply for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and those with difficult access, site made adobes often perform best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has created bricks in the borderlands of Mexico to the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Their low embodied energy content makes then dependable when applying inside their completed form. They may be extremely energy efficient and help control humidity and temperature fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the wintertime. They are also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and repairable.
