Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to new and old homes from the world's most energy efficient and durable material: earth; and today expands to providing individuals with their greatest tool of all: knowledge, to construct their particular.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, New Mexico. They regularly work through the entire American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They enjoy working together with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. Throughout a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they'd the fantastic pleasure of adding a bathroom accessory for the now expanded Old Town Center for your Arts.

It's all regulated in the Shape

Beyond Adobe can make any size, shape, or form of adobe brick you want, and is also creating custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to meet architectural demands. They use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, based on the client and circumstances.

Building - Pressed adobe blocks, best known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are manufactured utilizing a mixture of modern-day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by making use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation because of their uniformity of size and shape. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be produced in most seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Hand made, or puddled, adobe bricks begin each time a simple combination of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. The mix will be laid in forms on a lawn to mold the mud into the desired brick configuration. The shape is lifted from the adobe when the mud dries enough to help keep the adobes shape with no form. After having a few days of sunshine, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process may take from to four weeks to fully cure according to conditions. Puddled adobes result in bricks using a more individual shape, size and appear; no two bricks are quite the identical. They provide for a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and those with difficult access, site made adobes often work best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has created bricks from the borderlands of Mexico for the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters certainly are a combination of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents which come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their very own, along with a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and eco-friendly both in their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then dependable when applying within their completed form. They are extremely power efficient which help control temperature and humidity fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the wintertime. They're also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and easily repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their very own true, earth plaster. The plaster might be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats both for adobe and straw bale walls. In addition, it can also work as beautiful final plaster.

Earth - Beyond Adobe can also be an officially certified installer of American Clay Earth Plasters. Produced in, and taking advantage of materials from, the United States, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
