Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable answers to new and old homes from the world's most power efficient and durable material: earth; and now expands to providing people with their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to build their very own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work throughout the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, for urban and rural projects. They like working together with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. Throughout a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, that they had the truly amazing pleasure of adding a bathroom accessory for the now expanded Old Town Center for that Arts.

It's all regulated inside the Shape

Beyond Adobe will make any size, shape, or type of adobe brick you want, and is able to make custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to meet architectural demands. They use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, based on the client and circumstances.

Building - Pressed adobe blocks, best known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are made utilizing a mix of modern day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by utilizing hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost dry and ready for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation due to their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be made in most seasons as a result of reduced moisture content.

Made by hand, or puddled, adobe bricks begin whenever a simple combination of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. The mix will be laid in forms on the ground to mold the mud to the desired brick size and shape. The form is lifted off the adobe when the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape minus the form. Following a few days of sunshine, the bricks are set on edge to dry. The drying process may take in one to one month to totally cure according to weather conditions. Puddled adobes lead to bricks with a more individual shape, size and appearance; no two bricks can be exactly the same. They offer for a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in the finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and people with difficult access, site made adobes often perform best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe makes bricks in the borderlands of Mexico towards the farm country of Montana.
