Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable methods to old and new homes out of the world's most energy-efficient and durable material: earth; and today expands to providing people with their greatest tool of all: knowledge, to create their particular.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work throughout the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They enjoy working with individuals and communities alike to produce, preserve and restore earth buildings. During a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, that they had the truly amazing pleasure of adding a bathroom accessory for the now expanded Old Town Center for the Arts.

It's All in the Shape

Beyond Adobe can make any size, shape, or kind of adobe brick you want, and is also able to make custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to fulfill architectural demands. They will use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, depending on the client and circumstances.

Earth - Pressed adobe blocks, sometimes known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are created employing a mix of present day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by utilizing hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost totally dry and ready for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation for their uniformity of configuration. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which boosts the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be produced in most seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Made by hand, or puddled, adobe bricks begin whenever a simple mix of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. The mix is then laid in forms on the floor to mold the mud into the desired brick shape and size. The form is lifted from the adobe if the mud dries enough to help keep the adobes shape without the form. After a few days of sunshine, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process will take from to four weeks to fully cure depending on weather conditions. Puddled adobes bring about bricks with a more individual shape, size and appearance; no two bricks are very the same. They offer to get a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and people with difficult access, site made adobes often work best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe makes bricks from the borderlands of Mexico towards the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters are a mixture of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents that can come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods that belongs to them, plus a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and green both in their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe when applying inside their completed form. They are extremely energy efficient which help control temperature and humidity fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the wintertime. They are also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their very own true, earth plaster. The plaster might be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for both adobe and straw bale walls. Additionally, it may also serve as beautiful final plaster.

Brick - Beyond Adobe is also an officially certified installer of American Clay Earth Plasters. Produced in, and using materials from, the United States, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
