Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable methods to old and new homes out of the world's most energy efficient and durable material: earth; and now expands to providing people with their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to create their particular.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work through the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They like working with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. Within a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the fantastic pleasure of adding your bathroom addition for the now expanded Old Town Center for the Arts.

It's all regulated in the Shape

Beyond Adobe is likely to make any size, shape, or form of adobe brick you want, and is creating custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to fulfill architectural demands. They'll use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, with respect to the client and circumstances.

Earth - Pressed adobe blocks, sometimes known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are created using a mix of modern day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost totally dry and ready for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, in the compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and more efficient installation for their uniformity of configuration. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which boosts the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be produced in all seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Hand made, or puddled, adobe bricks begin when a simple combination of earth and water is mixed to some near mud consistency. The mixture is then laid in forms on a lawn to mold the mud to the desired brick shape and size. The shape is lifted from the adobe when the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape minus the form. After having a few days regarding, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process can take from to four weeks to fully cure depending on weather conditions. Puddled adobes bring about bricks having a more individual shape, size and appear; no two bricks are very exactly the same. They provide for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and those with difficult access, site made adobes often work best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe makes bricks from your borderlands of Mexico towards the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters are a combination of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents that come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their own, along with a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and eco-friendly both in their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe to use when applying within their completed form. They may be extremely energy efficient and help control humidity and temperature fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the wintertime. Also, they are non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their own true, earth plaster. The plaster might be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for both adobe and straw bale walls. In addition, additionally, it may function as beautiful final plaster.

Dirt - Beyond Adobe can also be an officially certified installer of American Clay Earth Plasters. Manufactured in, and using materials from, the United States, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
