Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to new and old homes out of the world's most energy-efficient and sturdy material: earth; and now expands to providing individuals with their greatest tool of all: knowledge, to create their very own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, New Mexico. They regularly work through the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, for urban and rural projects. They love working with individuals and communities alike to develop, preserve and restore earth buildings. During a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the truly amazing pleasure of adding a bathroom accessory for the now expanded Old Town Center for your Arts.

It's All in the Shape

Beyond Adobe can make any size, shape, or form of adobe brick you would like, and is able to make custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to meet architectural demands. They use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, with respect to the client and circumstances.

Building - Pressed adobe blocks, best known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are made employing a mix of modern-day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by making use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost totally dry and ready for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker plus more efficient installation for their uniformity of configuration. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be created in most seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Made by hand, or puddled, adobe bricks begin each time a simple mix of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. The mix is then laid in forms on the ground to mold the mud to the desired brick shape and size. The proper execution is lifted from the adobe when the mud dries enough to maintain the adobes shape with no form. After a day or two of sunshine, the bricks are set on edge to dry. The drying process can take from to a month to completely cure depending on conditions. Puddled adobes bring about bricks using a more individual shape, size and appearance; no two bricks are quite the same. They offer to get a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and the ones with difficult access, site made adobes often work most effectively for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has created bricks from the borderlands of Mexico towards the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters really are a combination of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents which come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their own, plus a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and eco-friendly in the their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe to use when applying within their completed form. They're extremely energy-efficient which help control temperature and humidity fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the wintertime. Also, they are non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and simply repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their very own true, earth plaster. The plaster may be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats both for adobe and straw bale walls. Furthermore, it can also serve as beautiful final plaster.

Environment - Beyond Adobe can be an officially certified installer of yankee Clay Earth Plasters. Produced in, and using materials from, america, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
