Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable answers to new and old homes from the world's most energy-efficient and durable material: earth; and today expands to providing individuals with their greatest tool of all: knowledge, to build their very own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, New Mexico. They regularly work throughout the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They like dealing with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. Within a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, that they had the fantastic pleasure of adding your bathrooms addition to the now expanded Old Town Center for that Arts.

It's All within the Shape

Beyond Adobe can make any size, shape, or form of adobe brick you desire, and is also capable of making custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to fulfill architectural demands. They use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, depending on the client and circumstances.

Workshops - Pressed adobe blocks, sometimes known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are created employing a combination of present day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced through the use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost completely dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation due to their uniformity of configuration. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which increases the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be made in most seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Handmade, or puddled, adobe bricks begin each time a simple combination of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. The mixture is then laid in forms on the floor to mold the mud into the desired brick shape and size. The form is lifted from the adobe when the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape without the form. Following a day or two regarding, the bricks are set on edge to dry. The drying process may take in one to one month to totally cure based on climate conditions. Puddled adobes bring about bricks having a more individual shape, size and appear; no two bricks are very the identical. They supply for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and those with difficult access, site made adobes often perform best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has made bricks from the borderlands of Mexico to the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters really are a mixture of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents that can come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their very own, plus a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and environmentally friendly both in their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe to use when applying inside their completed form. They may be extremely power efficient and help control humidity and temperature fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in Winter. They are also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and simply repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their own true, earth plaster. The plaster could be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for both adobe and straw bale walls. Additionally, it may also work as beautiful final plaster.

Arizona - Beyond Adobe can be an officially certified installer of American Clay Earth Plasters. Produced in, and taking advantage of materials from, the United States, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
