Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal would be to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to old and new homes from the world's most energy-efficient and sturdy material: earth; and today expands to providing people who have their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to create their very own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, New Mexico. They regularly work throughout the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They love working together with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. Throughout a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the fantastic pleasure of adding your bathroom addition for the now expanded Old Town Center for the Arts.

It's all regulated in the Shape

Beyond Adobe can make any size, shape, or form of adobe brick you would like, and is able to make custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to meet architectural demands. They use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, depending on the client and circumstances.

Block - Pressed adobe blocks, best known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are made using a combination of modern day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by utilizing hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost totally dry and prepared for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation due to their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which increases the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be created in every seasons because of the reduced moisture content.

Handmade, or puddled, adobe bricks begin when a simple mixture of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. The mix will then be laid in forms on the floor to mold the mud in to the desired brick configuration. The form is lifted off of the adobe if the mud dries enough to help keep the adobes shape with no form. Following a couple of days associated with, the bricks are set on edge to dry. The drying process will take from one to four weeks to fully cure according to conditions. Puddled adobes result in bricks using a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks can be the identical. They supply for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and people with difficult access, site made adobes often perform best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe makes bricks from the borderlands of Mexico for the farm country of Montana.
