Not Just the Name, but the History

He continued this environmentally-based entrepreneurial spirit by doing work for, and creating, new ventures from building the Sedona Community Recycling Center to starting and running a local curbside recycling and waste collection company. In 2004, Mr. Wayne hand-formed Beyond Adobe from the clay soils from the Verde Valley. Today, he resides in Sedona with his wife, Robin, and continues to expand Beyond Adobe's outreach in services and classes.

Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal would be to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable solutions to old and new homes from the world's most energy-efficient and durable material: earth; and today expands to providing people who have their greatest tool of all: knowledge, to create their very own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work through the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, for both urban and rural projects. They like working together with individuals and communities alike to build up, preserve and restore earth buildings. Throughout a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the fantastic pleasure of adding a bathroom addition for the now expanded Old Town Center for that Arts.

To make sure within the Shape

Beyond Adobe can make any size, shape, or kind of adobe brick you want, and is capable of making custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to satisfy architectural demands. They will use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, with respect to the client and circumstances.

Workshops - Pressed adobe blocks, sometimes known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are manufactured utilizing a mixture of modern-day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by utilizing hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost completely dry and ready for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation due to their uniformity of shape and size. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which increases the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be produced in every seasons due to the reduced moisture content.

Handmade, or puddled, adobe bricks begin when a simple mixture of earth and water is mixed with a near mud consistency. The mix will be laid in forms on a lawn to mold the mud into the desired brick shape and size. The proper execution is lifted from the adobe once the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape without the form. After having a day or two regarding, the bricks are positioned on edge to dry. The drying process may take from to one month to totally cure depending on climate conditions. Puddled adobes bring about bricks using a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks are quite the identical. They supply for any unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed in a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and those with difficult access, site made adobes often perform best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has created bricks in the borderlands of Mexico for the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters really are a combination of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents which come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their very own, along with a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and eco-friendly in both their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe when applying within their completed form. They are extremely energy efficient which help control humidity and temperature fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the wintertime. They're also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and easily repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their particular true, earth plaster. The plaster could be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats both for adobe and straw bale walls. Furthermore, additionally, it may serve as beautiful final plaster.
