Building Homes Not Houses

Beyond Adobe's goal is always to provide affordable, beautiful and sustainable answers to new and old homes out of the world's most energy efficient and durable material: earth; and today expands to providing people who have their greatest tool of most: knowledge, to create their own.

Beyond Adobe maintains adobe production yards in Camp Verde, Arizona and Deming, Boise state broncos. They regularly work throughout the American West utilizing local soils for on-site adobe production, both for urban and rural projects. They like working together with individuals and communities alike to produce, preserve and restore earth buildings. Throughout a 2010 project in Old Town Cottonwood, they had the great pleasure of adding a bathroom addition for the now expanded Old Town Center for the Arts.

It's all regulated inside the Shape

Beyond Adobe can make any size, shape, or form of adobe brick you want, and it is creating custom colored bricks from specified dirt or special shaped adobes to fulfill architectural demands. They will use either pressed adobe, puddled adobe, or site made, with respect to the client and circumstances.

Construction - Pressed adobe blocks, sometimes known as compressed adobe bricks or Earth blocks, are manufactured utilizing a mixture of present day technology and traditional earth building knowledge. Enhanced by making use of hydraulic presses and machine automation, the bricks emerge almost dry and ready for building. Pressed adobes provide significant increases in strength, both in compression and modulus of rupture, providing for quicker and much more efficient installation due to their uniformity of size and shape. The hydraulic force increases soil density, which raises the bricks' thermal mass ratings. Pressed adobes can be created in every seasons as a result of reduced moisture content.

Handmade, or puddled, adobe bricks begin when a simple combination of earth and water is mixed to some near mud consistency. The mixture will be laid in forms on a lawn to mold the mud in to the desired brick size and shape. The shape is lifted off of the adobe once the mud dries enough to keep the adobes shape without the form. After having a few days associated with, the bricks are placed on edge to dry. The drying process may take from to a month to totally cure according to climate conditions. Puddled adobes lead to bricks using a more individual shape, size and look; no two bricks can be the same. They offer to get a unique and pleasing aesthetic when left exposed inside a finished wall.

Site made adobe bricks vary widely. For rural sites and people with difficult access, site made adobes often work best for logistics and shipping costs. Beyond Adobe has created bricks from the borderlands of Mexico towards the farm country of Montana.

Finished to Fine Perfection

Earth plasters and natural clay plasters bring beautiful, appealing finishes of nature to adobe walls. Earth plasters are a combination of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents which come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. The plasters create stunning moods of their own, and a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings.

Natural clay plasters are organic and green in both their production and application. Their low embodied energy content makes then safe to use when applying within their completed form. They are extremely power efficient that assist control humidity and temperature fluctuations: providing cooler climates in Summer, and warmer in the wintertime. They are also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant, and easily repairable.

Beyond Adobe produces their particular true, earth plaster. The plaster might be partially stabilized with lime or Portland cement. This earth plaster makes excellent base coats for both adobe and straw bale walls. Additionally, it may also serve as beautiful final plaster.

Workshops - Beyond Adobe can be an officially certified installer of American Clay Earth Plasters. Manufactured in, and taking advantage of materials from, the United States, American Clay uses natural clays, recycled and reclaimed aggregates and vibrant natural pigments.
